PGT Sliding & Patio Doors: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

Replacing or repairing the rollers, tracks, lock sets, or weatherstripping on a PGT sliding or patio door in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $180 to $680 for parts and labor, and we carry the most common PGT-compatible hardware on our trucks so most jobs are done in a single visit. Most owners discover something is wrong the same way: the door starts dragging, it makes a grinding noise, or it won’t latch against the Florida afternoon rain. The good news is that PGT doors are built tough for this climate, and with the right part matched to your specific series, that door can slide like it did the day it was installed.

Winslow Windows & Doors is an independent service provider, not a PGT corporate entity. That means we stock and install OEM PGT parts as well as proven aftermarket equivalents, and we’ll tell you honestly which one makes sense for your door and your budget.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT has manufactured several sliding and patio door lines over the years, and each series has its own hardware quirks. The most common models we work on in Fort Lauderdale homes include the PGT 5500 Series, the PGT WinGuard sliding doors (impact-rated, a big one in Broward County), the PGT SpectraGuard line, and the older PGT 2500 and 3800 series that still show up in homes built from the 1990s through the 2010s. The fastest way to identify your door is to look in the bottom corner of the glass or the side jamb for an etched label or a metal tag with the series number.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: PGT roller assemblies are not universal. The 5500 Series uses a different roller housing depth than the WinGuard line, and swapping in the wrong one will leave your door sitting too high or too low on the track. Same thing with lock sets. A WinGuard door built before 2015 uses a different strike plate geometry than one built after. We always measure the existing part and cross-reference the series number before we order or install anything. That two-minute check saves you the frustration of a part that almost fits.

As for OEM versus aftermarket: PGT’s own rollers and track covers are excellent, but aftermarket equivalents from companies like Prime-Line and Slide-Co can match or exceed OEM quality at 30 to 40 percent less in some cases. For wear items like rollers, we’re comfortable recommending aftermarket. For anything related to the structural frame or impact glazing, we stick with PGT original parts every time. The frame is doing hurricane work on a Fort Lauderdale home, and that’s not the place to save forty bucks.

Signs Your PGT Sliding & Patio Door Is Failing

  • The door drags or sticks when you slide it. This is almost always a roller failure. Fort Lauderdale’s salt air and fine beach sand work their way into the roller bearings over time, and the steel raceways inside the rollers corrode. You’re feeling metal grinding on metal instead of riding on bearings.
  • You hear a grinding or scraping noise. Same root cause, further along. The roller wheels have stopped spinning entirely and are now dragging flat across the aluminum track. Every use is slowly gouging the track, which is a more expensive fix than replacing the roller itself.
  • The door won’t latch or the lock feels loose. The sliding door lock set, especially the mortise-style locks PGT used on many WinGuard doors, wears at the hook and strike plate contact point. Salt corrosion accelerates this in coastal neighborhoods like Rio Vista, Victoria Park, and anywhere east of Federal Highway.
  • Water seeps in near the bottom track during heavy rain. The weatherstripping fin on the bottom of the sliding panel has compressed or torn, and the track’s weep holes may also be clogged with debris. Fort Lauderdale’s summer downpours will find that gap fast.
  • The door closes, then drifts open slightly. The rollers have worn unevenly, or one has collapsed entirely, so the panel is no longer sitting level. This also means the door isn’t sealing flush, which makes it easy for humidity and insects to get in. In impact-rated WinGuard doors, a sagging panel also compromises the structural interlock, which matters when the wind starts blowing during hurricane season.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we currently charge in the Fort Lauderdale market, parts and labor included:

  • Roller replacement (both panels, four rollers): $180 to $290
  • Track cleaning, alignment, and lubrication: $95 to $150
  • Lock set replacement (OEM PGT lock, keyed or non-keyed): $140 to $260
  • Weatherstripping replacement (full door perimeter): $120 to $220
  • Complete hardware rebuild (rollers, track covers, locks, weatherstripping, and adjustment): $380 to $680

The price range comes down to three things: which PGT series you have (WinGuard hardware costs more than 2500 Series hardware), whether we’re using OEM or aftermarket parts, and the condition of the track itself. If a failed roller has gouged the track, the repair moves into track replacement territory, which shifts the cost upward. We give you a written line-item quote before any work starts, and that number is the number you pay. The labor on our hardware work is covered by our workmanship warranty, and Ed’s name is on every job we do in Fort Lauderdale.

DIY or Call Us?

Sliding door rollers and tracks are low-voltage, low-tension parts, so a careful homeowner can clean a track and tighten a loose handle safely. What we’d caution against is pulling a heavy sliding panel out of its frame without help. A PGT WinGuard sliding panel is laminated impact glass and it weighs more than most people expect. One slipped hand and you’re looking at a shattered panel, a bent frame, or a back injury, not a cheap door repair. We’ve also seen plenty of DIY roller swaps where the wrong roller was installed and the door sat crooked for months, wearing out the new roller in a season. If you’re not sure which series you have, or the door is heavy and unwieldy, call us at (904) 747-8989 and we’ll take care of it in one visit.

What Neighbors Say About Winslow Windows & Doors

★★★★★

"A tile roof repair and new windows from the same company meant one crew, one permit runner, and nobody blaming the other trade. Ed checked the roof work himself before the tarp came off."

HHenrietta Pemberton
★★★★★

"Ed measured every opening himself and walked me through the product approval paperwork before I signed anything. When the inspector came he found the notice of acceptance taped inside a window like it should be and passed us first visit."

RRosalind Beaumont
★★★★★

"Someone tried the back slider while we were away. The glass crazed and held, the alarm never had to earn its keep, and the police report reads better than it might have. Ed came out the next morning to check the frame himself."

CCornelius Adeyemi
★★★★

"Excellent work and a fair price for what it is, though impact glass is never cheap and one bedroom window arrived with a scratched pane. Ed flagged it before I saw it and the replacement went in without me chasing anyone."

BBartholomew Crenshaw
★★★★★

"Three big companies quoted us and every one sent a salesman with a leased truck. Ed turned up in a truck with his own name on the door, quoted less, and his crew were the same faces on day one and day nine."

YYolanda Betancourt
★★★★★

"Our insurance agent asked for the wind mitigation paperwork and Ed had the whole file ready the day the job closed, every opening photographed. The premium conversation went very differently this year."
