Mr-Glass Window Replacement: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

Mr-Glass window replacement in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $85 to $240 per insulated glass unit installed, depending on size, glass type, and whether the sash needs work. We stock and install Mr-Glass-compatible replacement glass panels and can usually complete the swap within a day or two of diagnosis. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a window that suddenly looks foggy between the panes, a room that feels warmer than it should, or a sash that won’t stay up without help.

What’s actually failing in most Mr-Glass units isn’t the frame. It’s the seal on the insulated glass assembly, known as the IGU. Over years of direct South Florida sun and salt air, the seal breaks down. Moisture gets in. Condensation forms inside the glass, the low-E coating starts to haze, and the window loses the energy performance it was built for. At that point, replacing the glass unit while keeping the existing frame is the most sensible repair for most Fort Lauderdale homes.

We’re an independent company, by the way. Winslow Windows & Doors is not affiliated with Mr-Glass the manufacturer, but we install Mr-Glass products and carry compatible replacement parts for them. We also stock parts for PGT, CGI, and CWS windows, so if one broken window turns into a whole-home audit, we’ve got you covered.

Which Mr-Glass Models This Applies To

Mr-Glass has produced several series over the years, and not all replacement parts cross from one to the next. The most common units we get calls about in Fort Lauderdale are the horizontal roller windows and single-hung impact units installed between roughly 2005 and 2020, though older units from the late 1990s still show up in neighborhoods like Victoria Park and Rio Vista.

The fastest way to identify your exact part is to check the corner of the glass or the edge of the frame for a small printed label. It will usually carry the Mr-Glass name, a series code, and sometimes a manufacturing date. If the label is gone, we measure the glass thickness, the overall unit dimensions, and the frame channel depth. That’s how we match OEM replacement glass or a correct aftermarket equivalent.

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Mr-Glass impact units built for coastal code have thicker laminated glass than their inland counterparts. A non-impact IGU swapped into an impact-rated frame will not meet Florida Building Code requirements for windborne debris zones. If you’re within a mile or two of the beach, the glass type matters as much as the measurements. We handle this check on every job so you don’t have to guess.

OEM replacement glass from Mr-Glass is available for many units, but lead times can stretch. In a lot of cases, we can source a quality aftermarket IGU with the same low-E coating, argon fill, and thickness specs, often faster and at a better price. We’re honest about the difference, because a window replacement is only as good as the glass that goes in it.

Signs Your Mr-Glass Window Replacement Is Failing

  • Persistent fog or condensation between the panes. This is the classic sign the IGU seal has failed. Moisture has entered the air space between the glass layers. You can wipe the inside and outside of the window all day and the fog won’t budge.
  • A visible haze or cloudiness on the glass surface. Over time, a failed seal lets the low-E coating oxidize. That milky film is the coating degrading. It doesn’t come off with cleaner, and the window loses its heat-reflecting ability.
  • The window feels hot to the touch in the afternoon. In Fort Lauderdale, a properly sealed insulated glass unit should keep the interior pane noticeably cooler. When the gas fill has leaked out, the window starts acting like single-pane glass and your AC works harder.
  • The sash is hard to roll or lift. Mr-Glass roller windows depend on clean tracks and functioning rollers. When rollers wear flat or the track fills with sand and salt residue from coastal air, the window drags or jams. The frame may still be fine; the hardware is just done.
  • You hear wind noise or feel a draft. A failed weatherstrip or a glass unit that has shifted slightly out of its channel lets air through. In older homes near the water, this is common after years of seasonal expansion and contraction.

Any one of these symptoms is enough reason to have the window looked at before the next storm season. A small seal failure today turns into a bigger repair after the first tropical system sits overhead for two days.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Fort Lauderdale, the installed price for a Mr-Glass-compatible replacement IGU typically falls between $85 and $240 per unit. Larger fixed picture windows run more than small awning or roller sashes. Impact-rated or laminated glass adds cost. So does a warm-edge spacer or a premium low-E coating like Solarban 70, which is worth the money if that window takes direct afternoon sun.

The price we quote includes removal of the old glass unit, inspection of the existing frame and hardware, installation of the new IGU, re-sealing and weatherstripping, and cleanup. If we find a broken roller, a corroded lock, or a bent track while we’re in there, we’ll tell you before we do anything extra. No surprise line items on the invoice. Every parts replacement we install carries a workmanship warranty, and Ed Winslow’s 36500-Day Done Right Promise applies: if it’s not done right, we make it right.

We’re upfront about pricing before we start. If you have a written estimate from another company, we’ll give you a free second opinion on it. And we don’t charge a trip fee to come out and look at the window if you’re in our service area.

DIY or Call Us?

There are some things you can check safely on your own. Cleaning the track, checking the weep holes for blockage, and looking for visible cracks in the caulking around the frame are all reasonable homeowner tasks. If the fog is between the glass panes, though, that glass unit is done and no amount of cleaning will fix it.

Swapping an insulated glass unit in a Mr-Glass frame looks straightforward, but it isn’t something we recommend as a weekend project. Impact windows have heavy laminated glass. The glazing beads and fasteners on coastal-rated units are specific, and getting the seal right is what keeps the new unit from failing early. A dropped corner or an over-tightened screw on an impact unit can ruin a $200 piece of glass in about two seconds. We’ve seen it happen more than once.

If you’re handy and want to pull the sash out for us, that’s fine and it saves you a little labor. But the actual glass replacement is a job for someone who does it every week. Call (904) 747-8989 and we’ll walk you through what you’re seeing before we even come out.

What Neighbors Say About Winslow Windows & Doors

★★★★★

"A tile roof repair and new windows from the same company meant one crew, one permit runner, and nobody blaming the other trade. Ed checked the roof work himself before the tarp came off."

HHenrietta Pemberton
★★★★★

"Ed measured every opening himself and walked me through the product approval paperwork before I signed anything. When the inspector came he found the notice of acceptance taped inside a window like it should be and passed us first visit."

RRosalind Beaumont
★★★★★

"Someone tried the back slider while we were away. The glass crazed and held, the alarm never had to earn its keep, and the police report reads better than it might have. Ed came out the next morning to check the frame himself."

CCornelius Adeyemi
★★★★

"Excellent work and a fair price for what it is, though impact glass is never cheap and one bedroom window arrived with a scratched pane. Ed flagged it before I saw it and the replacement went in without me chasing anyone."

BBartholomew Crenshaw
★★★★★

"Three big companies quoted us and every one sent a salesman with a leased truck. Ed turned up in a truck with his own name on the door, quoted less, and his crew were the same faces on day one and day nine."

YYolanda Betancourt
★★★★★

"Our insurance agent asked for the wind mitigation paperwork and Ed had the whole file ready the day the job closed, every opening photographed. The premium conversation went very differently this year."
