Therma-Tru Door Installation: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

Therma-Tru door installation in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $850 to $2,400 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a slab, pre-hung unit, or full frame with sidelites. We stock common Therma-Tru-compatible thresholds, weatherstripping, hinges, and bottom sweeps on our trucks, so most installations are done in one visit. Most owners discover the problem the way you probably did: the door drags on the threshold, water seeps in during a summer downpour, or the latch stopped catching. The cause is almost always one of three things in this climate: a warped slab from humidity, a rotted frame from salt air and rain exposure, or failed weatherseal that let moisture chew through the sill.

Call (904) 747-8989

We’re an independent installer, not a Therma-Tru corporate affiliate. That matters because we’ll tell you straight when an OEM part is worth the money and when a quality aftermarket equivalent does the same job for less.

Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru makes three main residential door lines that show up constantly in Fort Lauderdale homes: the Classic-Craft series (fiberglass, wood-grain look, popular in older neighborhoods like Victoria Park and Rio Vista), the Smooth-Star series (paint-ready fiberglass, common in newer construction west of I-95), and the Pulse series (polyurethane core, marketed for energy efficiency). We’ve installed all three, plus Therma-Tru’s fiberglass French doors and patio door systems.

The compatibility gotcha most owners hit is this: Therma-Tru slabs are not always interchangeable between series, even when the measurements match. A Classic-Craft door is thicker and heavier than a Smooth-Star slab. The hinge mortises, weatherstrip kerf, and threshold height are cut differently. If you find yourself shopping for a used door online, don’t buy it on width and height alone. Look for the series name printed on a label near the bottom edge of the slab or the top of the frame. If the label is gone, a quick photo sent to us will usually sort it out. On the OEM-vs-aftermarket question: we use OEM Therma-Tru weatherstripping and thresholds because those tolerances matter, but hinges and sweeps from brands like Pemko and M-D Building Products are often equal or better for less money, especially in coastal air.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Door Installation Is Failing

  • Door drags or sticks in humid weather. Fiberglass doesn’t swell like wood, which means a dragging door on hot days is usually a hinge or frame alignment problem. Therma-Tru frames are reinforced, but when installed over a slab with settling, the reveal can close up. Ignoring it grinds down the hinge pins until the door sags permanently.
  • Water appearing at the bottom corners after rain. The Fort Lauderdale downpour test never lies. If water tracks in at the corners, the threshold cap is either cracked, the weatherstrip is compressed, or the sill pan underneath was never flashed correctly. That last one is common with builder-grade installs from ten or fifteen years ago.
  • Lock set is difficult to turn or the deadbolt won’t engage. The strike plate shifts when the frame shifts. On a Therma-Tru door in a salt-exposed area, corrosion on the internal lock components also compounds this. A door that fights you is a door that’s telling you something.
  • Visible gaps or daylight around the door edges. There are two types of gaps: even gaps when the door is closed are a weatherstrip issue; uneven gaps are a frame setting issue. In South Florida, even a 1/8-inch gap lets air-conditioned air pour out and warm, wet air settle in.
  • Sun fading, hairline cracks, or chalking on the slab. Fort Lauderdale UV is merciless on door finishes, especially on west-facing entries. Fiberglass Therma-Tru slabs don’t crack easily, but the finish coat can fail and let the underlying material weather. Early refinishing stops the damage; when we install, we can address the finish while we’re at it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

We quote Therma-Tru door installation in two ways: you should know what’s in the number, line by line. A slab-only replacement in Fort Lauderdale generally falls between $850 and $1,400 installed, including pulling the old slab, cutting hinge mortises to match, hanging, and adjusting. A pre-hung replacement of the entire frame runs $1,400 to $2,400, depending on frame material, threshold type, and any rot or water damage we find once the old frame comes out. If the subfloor has been wetted for years, the additional carpentry gets quoted before any work moves forward, never sprung on you at the end.

Every quote from Winslow Windows & Doors is written, line-item, fixed, and includes haul-away of the old slab or frame. No change orders. If it’s not done right, the 36500-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and make it right. That promise is Ed’s name on the line, not corporate fine print. Call (904) 747-8989 for a free estimate on your Therma-Tru door installation, and mention the $40 off any repair over $200. No trip charge inside Broward County.

DIY or Call Us?

There are two or three things you can safely check on your own. Look at the threshold for cracks. Run a dollar bill along the weatherstrip with the door closed and see where it slips freely. Check the hinge screws: if they spin without tightening, the screw holes in the jamb are stripped. That last one is sometimes fixable by swapping to longer screws.

What you should not do is pull the frame or attempt a slab replacement on your own. A fiberglass door is unforgiving when you cut hinge mortises wrong the first time. The margin for error in reveal and alignment is an eighth of an inch. And if the frame is rotted, there’s a good chance water has been traveling behind the stucco where you can’t see it. That’s the kind of problem that turns a $1,200 job into a $4,000 repair when done wrong. If what you’re seeing doesn’t look simple, it probably isn’t. Call (904) 747-8989. We’ll talk it through and tell you if it’s a DIY fix or if we should come out.

What Neighbors Say About Winslow Windows & Doors

★★★★★

"A tile roof repair and new windows from the same company meant one crew, one permit runner, and nobody blaming the other trade. Ed checked the roof work himself before the tarp came off."

HHenrietta Pemberton
★★★★★

"Ed measured every opening himself and walked me through the product approval paperwork before I signed anything. When the inspector came he found the notice of acceptance taped inside a window like it should be and passed us first visit."

RRosalind Beaumont
★★★★★

"Someone tried the back slider while we were away. The glass crazed and held, the alarm never had to earn its keep, and the police report reads better than it might have. Ed came out the next morning to check the frame himself."

CCornelius Adeyemi
★★★★

"Excellent work and a fair price for what it is, though impact glass is never cheap and one bedroom window arrived with a scratched pane. Ed flagged it before I saw it and the replacement went in without me chasing anyone."

BBartholomew Crenshaw
★★★★★

"Three big companies quoted us and every one sent a salesman with a leased truck. Ed turned up in a truck with his own name on the door, quoted less, and his crew were the same faces on day one and day nine."

YYolanda Betancourt
★★★★★

"Our insurance agent asked for the wind mitigation paperwork and Ed had the whole file ready the day the job closed, every opening photographed. The premium conversation went very differently this year."
